Calculation steps
- Calculate the full shift duration, including work across midnight.
- Find only the overlap between the shift and night period.
- Deduct an unpaid break from paid time and eligible allowance hours.
- Multiply eligible hours by hourly wage and the allowance rate.
Worked example
- Shift and night period: 22:00–06:00
- Unpaid break: 30 minutes
- Hourly wage: €20; night rate: 25%
- 7.5 eligible hours × €20 × 25% = €37.50 night allowance; base pay is €150.
Important limitations
- Contracts and collective agreements may define different night periods or rates.
- Paid breaks remain included in base pay and allowances.
- Sunday and holiday allowances may overlap under separate rules.
