Working time guide

Calculate working time with breaks

The period from start to finish is gross time. Correctly handling paid and unpaid breaks gives you the net working time used for a personal hours comparison.

Calculate working time →

Gross and net time

  • Gross time covers the full period between start and end.
  • Deduct an unpaid break; keep a paid break as working time.
  • Formula: gross time − unpaid break = net working time.

Day-shift example

  • 06:00–14:00 equals 8 hours gross.
  • After a 30-minute unpaid break, net working time is 7 hours 30 minutes.

Night-shift example

  • For 22:00–06:00, the end is on the following day.
  • Gross time is still 8 hours; after a 30-minute unpaid break, 7 hours 30 minutes remain.

Comparing overtime

  • Compare net working time with target hours for each completed workday.
  • Extra time is not automatically payable overtime; contractual rules may differ.
