Overtime guide

Overtime pay or time off?

The better option is not determined by the amount alone. Your time account, premium, recovery needs and applicable agreements also matter.

Value of a payout

  • Base value: overtime hours × gross hourly wage
  • Premium: base value × premium percentage
  • Gross payout: base value + premium

Payout example

  • 20 overtime hours × €20 = €400 base value
  • A 25% premium adds €100.
  • Estimated gross payout: €500 before taxes and contributions.

Comparing time off

  • Factor 1 gives one free hour per overtime hour.
  • Factor 1.25 turns 20 overtime hours into 25 free hours.
  • Check when the time off can actually be taken.

Questions before deciding

  • What does your contract or collective agreement say?
  • Are there deadlines or time-account limits?
  • How would a payout be taxed?
  • Is recovery time more valuable to you right now?
